Israel is the world's second most educated country: OECD report

07.02.2012

Israel is the second country in the world with the highest education, though it ranked poorly in education expenditure and GDP, said a report released Wednesday by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The OECD's 2011 edition of the report "Education at a glance: OECD Indicators" showed that Israel has one of the highest percentage of the world's population with a post-secondary degree.

Forty-five percent of the population in Israel are highly educated, only outnumbered by Canada with 50 percent. Other OECD countries following are Japan (44 percent), the United States (41 percent) and Britain (37 percent.)

The report also stated that 78 percent of the money spent in education is taken from the public budget but it also highlighted Israelis decreasing number of citizens who obtained a post- secondary degree.

The study also concluded that although Israel boasts a high number of educated population, its expenditure in proportion to the GDP during 2011 decreased.

The expenditure in proportion to the GDP is an indication of how a country prioritizes education in relation to its overall allocation of resources.
