MALAYSIA: Temporary Freeze On Offer For New Medical Courses
10.05.2011 Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin Thursday said that a temporary freeze had been imposed on institutions of higher learning (IPT) in the country from offering new medical courses, effective May 1 this year.
The freeze would be for five years, he added. He said the cabinet had agreed to impose the moratorium on the justification of the marked increase in the number of medical graduates produced by the IPT, competency of those undergoing housemanship and those at teaching hospitals. "Apart from that, a moratorium on new intake is also proposed for IPT which do not meet the accreditation criteria and standards. "The existing accreditation can be withdrawn until improvements are carried out," he said after witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the Institute of Professional Development-Open University of Malaysia (IPD-OUM) and the Malaysian Building Contractors Association (PPBM) on Thursday. IPD-OUM was represented by OUM Senior Vice-President OUM Prof Dr Mansor Fadzil, while PPBM by its president, Kwan Foh Kwai. Mohamed Khaled said the freeze would not adversely affect the number of medical graduates needed by the country because there would be enough of them to graduate from the existing 33 IPT in the country, as well as those who would graduate from foreign universities. The country is capable of producing enough medical doctors by 2020 with a ratio of one medical doctor to every 400 residents, he added. He said what was important was to ensure the medical graduates were able to undergo quality housemanship.
