INDIA: Top universities improve research index scores

29.11.2010
At a time when scientific and research agencies are worried about fewer academics taking up research, it comes as a surprise that most of the top 50 Indian universities have remarkably improved their H-index scores in the latest rankings by the National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies in New Delhi, writes D Suresh Kumar for The Times of India.

The H-index is a parameter used to assess the performance of researchers and institutions based on the number of times a published research paper has been cited by peers or other researchers. The improved H-index scores indicate that the quality of research pursued in many domestic universities has gone up.

With the improved rankings, many state universities including some of the well-established ones in Hyderabad, Delhi, Chennai, Pune and Mumbai, can look forward to higher grants from the department of science and technology under its flagship Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence (PURSE) programme.
