UK: Study questions science-economic growth link
01.09.2010 An academic believes he has found evidence to refute the argument that increased university provision of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) subjects is needed to aid the economy, writes John Morgan for Inside Higher Ed.
According to Paul Whiteley, professor of politics at the University of Essex, his analysis shows there is "no significant relationship" between a nation's economic growth rate and number of Stem students. His findings follow January's comments by then business secretary, Peter Mandelson, who said that Stem skills were "crucial in securing future prosperity", hence the government was "opening up opportunities in universities and beyond".
